Faculty of Mathematics UNIX Course

Outline

The course comprises 6 one Hour Lectures. The first 4 are mainly aimed at entry level UNIX users, but may benefit those with more experience. The last 2 classes, covering Unix Shells and Scripts can prove useful to most users. Subjects covered are Directories, Files, i.e. Names, Properties and Access, Basic Commands, Shells and last, an introduction to Scripting.

Printed copies are provided of all overheads, but people may wish to take additional notes as demonstrations and extra explanations will be written on blackboards or flip charts. While classes will last about an hour, they will retain use of the room for an eventual half hour of questions afterwards.

As the initial 4 sessions remain quite basic, for those already familiar with the Operating System, only the Shells and Scripting Lectures, or just the last one would be worth attending, unless a refresher is wanted anyway. Each session after the first begins with a quick recap, so those missing any session can still join or continue with the course and are welcome to do so.

The course may be complemented by basic Fortran and 'C' Programming courses, each also of 6 one hour lectures, intended for beginners in those languages. These are normally advertised separately.
