A memorial service for Professor David Kendall will be held at Great
St Mary's Church at 2.00pm on Friday 7th March 2008. The service will be
followed by refreshments and an opportunity for reminiscences, from
3.30pm at Churchill College. Those wishing to come to the event at
Churchill College are asked to inform Mrs Felicity Russell, the Bursar's
Assistant, if possible by 22nd February (Felicity.Russell@chu.cam.ac.uk
or 336212).
Professor David Kendall died peacefully on 23 October 2007. David joined
the Statistical Laboratory from Magdalen College,
Oxford in 1962 as our first Professor of Mathematical Statistics. He was
a founder member of the new Department of Pure
Mathematical and Mathematical Statistics, created in 1964 with the
amalgamation of statistics and pure mathematics. He was
elected to a Fellowship at Churchill College, and his links to Churchill
and to the Laboratory remained strong following
his retirement in 1985 from his University post.
David's work on probability and statistics earned him a reputation
worldwide as a scientist of the greatest distinction. He
will be remembered by his colleagues and students with warmth and
respect. Our sympathy and thoughts are with his wife
Diana and their family.
