Understanding Uncertainty

Since 2007 this programme has worked at improving the way that the quantitative aspects of uncertainty are discussed and handled. It has engaged in public risk issues, such as serving on the government advisory panel on volcanic ash, Royal Society working party on climate change, and inquiry panel into paediatric cardiac deaths, and has publicly commented on timely topics such as swine flu, weather forecasting, and crisp competitions.

Close collaboration with the Millennium Mathematics Project in setting up a Risk Roadshow, and providing material for Plus and NRich.

Public engagement
: Over 180 presentations since October 2007, to over 9000 school students and 14,000 others. A popular website, regular columns in national newspapers, radio and TV appearances, a Youtube video with over 57000 hits.
