Information for Prospective Ph.D. Students

The University of Cambridge offers a Ph.D. degree by dissertation. The following information was taken mainly from the University of Cambridge Graduate Studies Prospectus. You can download a Graduate Application Pack online . More information about PhDs in mathematics is available on the Faculty of Mathematics website. For details of the new four-year PhD Programme spanning pure, stochastic, computational and applied analysis please visit the Cambridge Centre for Analysis (CCA) website. A good source of unofficial advice is the Graduate Union Website.

Before applying for admission, prospective applicants are advised to make their own enquiries about the general condition and standard of graduate study at Cambridge. Those from overseas in particular should seek advice about these matters from members of the academic staff of their own University or from others with first-hand knowledge of Cambridge. Students already in Cambridge reading Part III may contact Dr R.Nickl for advice before applying.

Students intending to begin their Ph.D research in October should apply by the end of January; candidates may be at a disadvantage if their applications are received later than this date and should be aware of earlier deadlines if applying for financial support. Research students may also be admitted from January and April; such applicants also should apply for admission between six and twelve months in advance of their intended date of admission, but should have regard to the closing dates for studentships and other financial awards.

Details of funding to cover or help with the cost of Ph.D. study can be found here. Many awards have closing dates for applications long before October, some even a year in advance, so it is important to begin applying for awards as early as possible.

For details of the research interests of the staff see the Statistical Laboratory members webpage. If further information is required, write direct to the to the relevant member of staff or to Julia Blackwell indicating what area of statistics you are interested in.
