Professor Sir Michael Rawlins
Failings in hierarchies of evidence for controversial health-policy decisions
Western philosophers have debated on the nature of what constitutes "scientific" enquiry for hundreds of years. In this lecture Michael Rawlins will consider the respective places of experimentation and observation in deciding whether therapeutic interventions are fit for purpose
Tim Harford
Numbers are weapons: A self defence guide
Tim Harford is presenter of Radio 4's "More or Less" - a program commended three years running for excellence in journalism by the Royal Statistical Society. But Tim isn't a statistician - and neither is anyone else on the program team. So how do people with a limited understanding of the technical details keep their heads - and their facts straight - in a world swimming with complex statistics? Tim presents a self-defence guide for the statistical battlefield.

Professor Sir John Beddington
What’s happening to the world?
The presentation will focus on some of the key and arguably irrevocable changes that will be occurring in the 21st century over the next few decades. It will then focus on some of the potential hazards that may emerge over a much shorter timescale and finally look towards the middle of the century and beyond. Inter alia it will cover issues of climate, population, urbanisation, resource security and the National Risk Register.
