Computing Information For Hosts And Visitors
Before Your Visitors Arrive
The aim of this document is to make sure that visitors to the Statslab
will be able to use our computers and our network when they arrive.
Before they can use our computers, I have to set up an account for
them, and it makes things easier if I can have their account ready for
them and give them an envelope with their userid and password and my
introductory information. If they are
bringing a laptop, I may also have to wire up a socket for it.
Therefore I should like to know
about visitors before they arrive.
In order to set up an account, I need the following information for
all visitors:
- Their full name.
- Whether they want to use our Linux machines, our Windows machines
or both.
- Their leaving date if known (it's best if I don't keep too many
unused accounts around, for security purposes).
- Their room number if known (this is only essential if they are
bringing a laptop).
Important Servers And Forwarding Email
If you want to transfer files between your Statslab account and your
other account, or if you want to read email over a modem from home,
then it may be useful to know the following servers.
- Our FTP server
is ftp.statslab.cam.ac.uk
- Our SMTP
server is mail.statslab.cam.ac.uk
- Our IMAP server is mail.statslab.cam.ac.uk
It is possible to forward email from one account to another
automatically. On a Unix system, this is done using a file called
.forward in your home directory. If you want to forward email from
your other account to your statslab account, log into your other
account and create a .forward file with the single line
``username@statslab.cam.ac.uk'', without the quotation marks and
replacing ``username'' with your username.
