``Logging in remotely'' covers a wide variety of activities, including
the following:
- Using ssh (telnet and rlogin are blocked by the firewall because
they are insecure) to connect to one of the Statslab Linux
machines. Note that a text-based session is easier to set up than
full graphical access.
- Reading email from home e.g., with a Windows mail
client.
- Viewing web pages which are only accessible from machines on the
University network.
- Opening Windows files in your Statslab home directory,
preferably without copying them to your machine first.
Also, I have no way of determining exactly how your home computer is
set up, and if you are attempting to connect from a business or
university network, further complications may be caused by their
firewall. For these reasons, it is impossible for me to give detailed
guidance on exactly how to log in remotely. Here are some tips
that may be helpful.
