I can't print

This could be a consequence of user error, the Postscript file you are attempting to print being improperly formed or too complicated for the printer, or a genuine problem with the printer queues requiring my intervention.

Here are some common mistakes to watch out for. If you forget to specify the printer, your job will go to ps2 unless you have changed the default. Most Linux applications let you pick the printer from a menu, but gv requires you to specify a print command. This should be ``lpr -Pps10'' to print to ps10.

Sometimes documents are configured for letter paper. Most of our printers are able to cope with this automatically, but if you notice a printer flashing a message such as ``LOAD LETTER'', you can persuade it to print by pressing the ``Go'' button. Then email me giving the name of the printer, because I may be able to configure it not to complain about this any more.

PDF files are often rather temperamental. If you have trouble printing one from acroread, then it may help to try Foxit Reader or gv instead, or to print the file from a Windows machine.

If the above advice doesn't apply, you could try sending your job to ps7 or ps10. They are newer and faster than the other printers, and are less prone to getting clogged up with long queues of jobs. If that doesn't help, let me know.
